Prenatal Ultrasound Study of Gender Difference in Urinary Tract Morphology in Normal Fetuses
نویسندگان
چکیده
Objective: To compare gender difference on renal pelvic size and urinary bladder volume (BV) in normal male and female fetuses at 37 weeks of gestational age (GA) using ultrasound. Methods: 414 normal singleton pregnancies of 37 weeks GA were included. In each fetus, antero-posterior (AP) diameter of the renal pelvis and BV was measured. Results: Male fetuses were found to have greater AP diameter of renal pelvis than female (male: 2.69±0.93 mm and female: 2.46±0.87 mm) (p<0.05, independent sample t-test). Female fetuses were found to have a greater BV than male (male: 13.93±8.43 cm3 and female: 17.22±10.22 cm3) (p<0.05, independent sample T test). Conclusions: Gender difference in morphology indicates that the respective urinary tract development is different between male and female fetuses, which probably accounts for gender difference in the urinary tract anomalies detected during neonatal period.

Background Fetal hydronephrosis is a common urinary tract anomaly that may result in renal parenchyma damage. Ultrasound is considered a simple, noninvasive procedure to diagnose and track antenatal hydronephrosis. Our aim was to study the clinical course of fetal hydronephrosis in fetuses. متن کاملPrenatal bladder drainage in the management of fetal lower urinary tract obstruction: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
OBJECTIVE To estimate the effect of prenatal bladder drainage on perinatal survival in fetuses with lower urinary tract obstruction. DATA SOURCES Relevant articles were identified by searching the databases MEDLINE (1966-2002), EMBASE (1988-2002), and the Cochrane library (2000;4). METHODS OF STUDY SELECTION Studies were selected if the effect of prenatal bladder drainage (vesicocentesis, v...
متن کاملLower Urinary Tract Obstruction
Lower urinary tract obstruction is defined as partial or complete obstruction of the urinary tract at the level of the urethra and the bladder. The posterior urethral valves are the most common cause, 9 percent of the fetal uropathies. The incidence range is wide, because of different databases show different populations. The most severe obstructive uropathy is in patients with kidney damage, o...
